How Permeable Pavers Work
Permeable pavers represent a breakthrough in sustainable design and construction practices, with enormous benefits to our environment and ecosystems. Permeable pavers can prevent standing water and runoff pollution, but they also help restore the natural water cycle by filtering out pollutants before entering our water supply.
Water lands on the paver surface and drains straight down through the open joints between each paver (the vertical gaps filled with permeable jointing material), instead of running off.
Below the pavers, a thin layer of coarse bedding aggregate lets water continue moving downward while still supporting the pavers structurally.
The aggregate layer beneath the bedding is designed with large void spaces, so water disperses horizontally and vertically rather than pooling.
The bottom layer of larger crushed stone has the biggest gaps of all, acting like an underground reservoir that temporarily holds stormwater.
From the sub-base, water percolates gradually into the ground below, recharging groundwater instead of overwhelming storm drains.
