You are probably referring to efflorescence, a natural and common occurrence in concrete products. Efflorescence occurs when natural salts come to the surfaces and leave behind a white deposit that can normally be brushed off. This is not a product defect or harmful to pavers and walls and Lowcountry Paver accepts no liability for its occurrence. It will usually weather away with time. If you prefer not to wait for nature to take its course, efflorescence cleaners can be purchased that will help remove the residue and restore the color.
Absolutely, but steps must be taken so that water does not sit underneath the Lowcountry pavers. Drainage holes should be drilled through the slabs, filled with pea gravel and covered with landscape fabric to provide proper drainage.
Thin pavers laid over top of existing concrete without drain holes as described above cannot drain as well as pavers laid over a stone and sand base. Since efflorescence is drawn out of concrete by moisture and humidity, this excess moisture causes the efflorescence to appear more rapidly and dramatically than pavers over sand.
Yes, if site conditions permit, our 2 3/8” pavers can be laid over an existing driveway without the need of removing the existing concrete. Some contractors have used our 1” thin pavers for driveway overlays with good results, however, we do not recommend this or guarantee 1” paver for vehicular traffic.
