Pattern Options

For driveways, we recommend a Herringbone or Improved Herringbone pattern. The interlocking, angled layout locks pavers together and resists shifting under the weight and turning force of vehicle tires far better than a straight Running Bond. Our HydraShed and WaterShed one-piece pavers laid in Herringbone, or a three-piece Improved Herringbone, both hold up well on Lowcountry driveways.

It depends on the space. Herringbone’s 45-degree interlock spreads weight in every direction, making it the stronger choice for driveways and other high-traffic areas. Running Bond has a simpler, brick-like look with clean straight lines, which makes it a popular, budget-friendly option for patios, walkways, and pool decks where foot traffic, not vehicles, is the main concern.

The “piece count” tells you how many paver sizes are combined in the layout. One-piece patterns, like our Running Bond, Herringbone, Basket Weave, and Double Herringbone, use a single uniform paver size for a clean, repeatable look. Two- and three-piece patterns, such as our Muster K or Improved Herringbone, mix multiple sizes, like Rectangle 1, Square 1, and Small Rec 1, into one layout for a more textured, custom appearance that’s popular on larger driveways and patios.

Running Bond and Basket Weave are two of our most popular patterns for pool decks and patios because they read as more relaxed and casual than Herringbone, and they pair well with a Tumbled or Traditional finish for a slip-resistant, barefoot-friendly surface. A Modular pattern using Charleston Edgestone or Charleston Flagstone is another great option if you want a more upscale, less uniform look around the pool.

Yes, to an extent. Pattern affects how joints line up and how water moves across the surface. If drainage is a priority, such as around a pool, a low-lying yard, or a septic-conscious lot here in the Lowcountry, we recommend pairing a Herringbone or Running Bond layout with our permeable HydraShed or WaterShed pavers, which let water pass through the joints and base rather than running off.

Absolutely, and it’s a popular way to add visual interest. Many of our customers use a three-piece pattern like Running Bond or Improved Herringbone for the main driveway or patio field, then switch to a one-piece Herringbone or a contrasting paver, like Lowcountry Edgestone or Lowcountry Flagstone, as a border or accent band to frame the space.
